Inventory of practice

One   of   the   keys   to   embedding   good   practice   is   to   make   sure   that   people   understand   how   all   the various   parts   of   the   commissioning   process   fit   together.   With   an   holistic   view   of   the   process   it’s then   easier   to   improve   consistency   and   develop   a   shared   understanding   of   what   needs   to   be done when. There   are   a   number   of   visual   representations   of   the   commissioning   process   -   each   of   which   has some   merit   -   but   don’t   quite   work   for   us,   so   we   have   created   a   new   one   which   combines   the best   features   from   all   of   them.      Whether   you   work   in   the   public   or   private   sector   the   sequence   is the same. The   cycle   has   six   main   stages   and   at   its core    -    Governance,    Capability    and Learning.     We     also     reflect     the ongoing   interaction   we   need   to have    with    the    wider    market and   service   users   throughout the process.   Each    of    these    is    explored    in more detail.

Commissioning stages

1 . Understand needs 2 . Design goods or service 3 . Source goods or service 4 . Implement changes 5 . Deliver goods or service 6 . Monitor and evaluate outcomes
